Have You Seen The Movie Juno!?

It’s about a teenage pregnancy, a dysfunctional family and a crumbling marriage…
… and well… it’s great.
Really.
When and if you see the movie Juno, you’ll have to let me know what you thought.
****
When there’s a movie I really wanna see… my motto HAS to be…
“Don’t read about it, don’t read reviews of who said whatever, just go see it.”
I don’t always remember when my interest is peaked by a new story. And there’s been plenty of shows/books/movies that have been disappointing for me because I didnt’ follow my Movie Motto or had gotten into a position where I’ve overheard something.
For instance, I watched part of a few documentries or something on a few recent movies because they intrigued me. I had no sense to not hear/watch/read these outlines of the stories and even though I didn’t finish either.. but dang it… I hate the idea going to a movie and analyzing and comparing what I heard/watched/read.
Hmmmph.
Sometimes you can’t control what others say. Even when you tell them seconds before… “I didn’t didn’t finish the story yet”.

Here’s what I thought of Juno.
If you like quirky, clever, original… you likely enjoy it as much as I did.
There was a point early in the movie where I thought some of the dialogue was getting a bit TOO clever but this feeling drifted away shortly thereafter when the story ensued.
Dang… the writing was fabulous and fun… and the director certainly made me feel like it was. I guess the young director acquired a little talent, aside from his own natural creativity, from that of his Dad.

Ellen Page did so well with this character, Juno. And yes, I’m pleased she received an Oscar nomination for the role. She really made it her own. There isn’t any other actress I could see as this character.
She deserves any kudos she gets for the movie, as does the writer and director.
Vanessa Loring: Your parents are probably wondering where you are.
Juno MacGuff: Nah… I mean, I’m already pregnant, so what other kind of shenanigans could I get into?
Leah: Dude, I think it’s best to just tell ‘em.
Juno MacGuff: I’m Pregnant.
Bren: Oh, God.
Juno MacGuff: But, uh ah, I’m going to give it up for adoption and I already found the perfect couple, they’re going to pay for the medical expenses and everything. And and what ah 30 or odd weeks we can just pretend that this never happened.
Mac MacGuff: You’re pregnant?
Juno MacGuff: I’m sorry. I’m sorry… And if it is any consolation I have heartburn that is radiating in my knee caps and I haven’t taken a dump since like Wednesday… morning.
Juno MacGuff: You should’ve gone to China, you know, ’cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events.
I loved the interaction between Juno and her parents. Especially when she told her Dad and Stepmom the news of her pregnancy….
Mac MacGuff: No, I know I mean who’s the father, Juno?
Juno MacGuff: Umm… It’s Paulie Bleeker.
Mac MacGuff: Paulie Bleeker? Really?
Juno MacGuff: What?
Mac MacGuff: I didn’t think he had it in him.
Leah: I know, right?
Bwahahahahahaaaaaa….. I LOVE Juno’s Dad.
Mac MacGuff: Did you see that coming?
Bren: Yeah… but I was hoping she was expelled, or into hard drugs.
Mac MacGuff: Or DWI… anything but this.
Mac MacGuff: Next time I see that Bleeker kid I’m going to punch him in the wiener.
**
OK… Brief off topic moment…
I hate that word…. weiner.
Always have.
I like the idea of someone wanting to punch it. The actual word… NOT the body part he was referring to.
**
The actor, J.K. Simmons who plays Mac MacGuff has such a great resume. I love him in most everything I’ve seen him work in.
I love that Juno’s parents didn’t do the typical freak out of the news.
I love that the Stepmom started making that list right away (after the initial shock) to help take care of Juno.
I love that they supported her in her decision… didn’t demand, direct.. just listened and made the attempt to help her in what she chose to do.
*
The movie wasn’t only quirky… it was also tender and sweet.
The touching relationship between Juno and Paulie Bleeker, played by Michael Cera, was memorable.
Juno MacGuff: I think I’m, like, in love with you.
Paulie Bleeker: You mean as friends?
Juno MacGuff: No, I mean, like, for real. ‘Cause you’re, like, the coolest person I’ve ever met, and you don’t even have to try, you know…
Paulie Bleeker: I try really hard, actually.
Michael Cera was awesome in Arrested Development. I miss that show.

I could relate…

… to both the Juno character (for a few obvious reasons) and Vanessa, the adoptive mother… played by Jennifer Garner.
Mostly, I felt for Vanessa in her desire for a child… a family… She was mostly hesitant and strained. You were really hoping she would just relax. You wanted her to believe even when you know she couldn’t. I could understand her actions, personality, and even more in the end when her marriage crumbled. She knew. There was an unknown reason (to us) for her to be hesitant (aside from the chaotic feelings of wanting a child).. not necessarily because of Juno and the baby… but because she knew.
Mark Loring: [after Vanessa's asks him if he found an apartment] It’s not an apartment, it’s a loft.
Vanessa Loring: Well, aren’t you the cool one?
Vanessa Loring: How do I look?
Bren: Like a new mom. Scared shitless.
*
Huh?
I didn’t care for the uncomfortable interaction later in the movie between Juno and the adoptive father, Mark Loring, played by Jason Bateman. It was sooo very creepy and I’m pleased in the end he didn’t have anything to do with the baby.
*
I’m looking forward to another movie from the people behind Juno.
It was really good.
I recommend.
Thumbs up.
Three and a half stars.
Will likely buy the DVD.

Over a week ago.. on the same afternoon, DH and I had a mini matinee movie marathon.
We also saw 27 Dresses with Katherine Heigl.

It was a good entertaining movie.
Nothing which will win grand awards but it was a fun movie to enjoy during an afternoon matinee.
There is something refreshing about Katherine Heigl. She seems to exude positive energy and personality… someone you would want in your life… a fun friend to share some laughs with.
I imagine some people… men for example… would like her in their lives for very different reasons. I can see this. She is stunning. Though, sometimes her beauty takes me by surprise. I guess I forget, as I get wrapped up with enjoying her character(s).

No Country For Old Men is still on my list. I happily noticed it arrived back to the theatre last week.
We were thinking of adding it to our matinee marathon, but sleepiness and a headache were brewing after the second movie so we headed home.
DH and I are thinking of heading to that one soon… as in this weekend…. before it disappears again.

We LOVE the movies.
Before last week, it had been a while since we headed to the movie theatre… I guess we go in streaks. We used to go more often. Especially at certain holidays.
Yes, it can be expensive seeing a movie in the theatre but some movies were MEANT to be seen on the big screen. There’s something special about enjoying time at the theatre.
We saw the latest Harry Potter movie in the theatres and DH did take me to see 3:10 To Yuma this past year… but that was pretty much it. Prior to that? No clue when we saw a movie in the theatre.
Often, our intention is to head to the theatre for a particular movie but it doesn’t always happen. Time gets away from us… But, many of them aren’t in the theatres long enough to allow us to do this. You really have to be quick nowadays.
It seems like movies are burned into DVDs at the same time as or earlier than they are made to be distributed out to the theatres.
I don’t think we actually rented any movies last year at all. Many times we just buy a DVD if we catch it on sale when it hits the shelves. Then our issue becomes when to sit down and watch it together.
We are spoiled by our DVR system. There are many shows we record and it’s often nice to sit back and have a little marathon at home of the different recordings we’ve accumulated.
