Baby And I Still Kicking… Literally.

Monday, April 7, 2008

Yep, I’m still here… alive and well.   Though my internet connection for my laptop has taken a turn for the worse and it’s driving me crazy to say the least!   Darn router/network thingy.   Hmmph.   Obviously, I haven’t been online very much.

And… other than the puter/router/network stuff… I’d likely be better at calling each and everyone of you on the phone to chit chat.   If it were possible, I’d be better at communicating this way.

Seriously, I’ll admit not being the greatest blogger out there.   I’m anal and like things “just right” and want to entertain and provide pictures and blah blah blah.

Believe me… it annoys me too.

There’s been LOTS to blog about.  It’s not exactly been boring around here.   Rather busy and comical most of the time.  For instance, there was the…..

I’ll work on being a better blogger!!   And… hopefully SOON be more informed on the puter/router/network stuff.

****

As for Baby…

Baby is growing and doing well.

I’m trying to convince myself I actually look like I have a Baby Bump and it doesn’t look like a “beer… er… wine belly”.    LOL!

I like my baby bump/wine belly… and all the action going on in there.

*

Not sure if I mentioned this previously, but we are NOT learning the baby’s gender ahead of time.

In years past, I was on the fence as to whether I’d want to know ahead of time.    I thought it would be fine either way and a surprise whenever I found out… but DH decided he didn’t want to know ahead of time.

So we’re going with waiting.

I like the idea.

I’m a planner and… we’re waiting.

I am totally fine with waiting.

*

At the 20 week ultrasound we made sure the tech knew we didn’t want to know.   At the end of the appt, I couldn’t help but ask her… “I suppose you know if it’s a boy or a girl?”

The tech answered coyly, “I think I may have an idea, but really am not sure.”   Whether I believed her or not, I was totally relieved and happy with her reply.

Then, we go into the appt with the Doctor and as she’s reading the chart she says…. “Oh, I better hide this information since you want to wait.”

Apparently, the tech jotted down the answer in that chart.

I would have preferred Doctor pretending she didn’t know either… OR…. at least NOT mention THREE times in that short but significant 10 minute appt that “… IF WE CHANGE OUR MIND, just give the office a call.”

Gah!!

In the weeks since, Doctor’s offer has only driven me crazy 15% 30% 20% of the time.

And… I’ll admit, I occasionally, in those weak sugar overloaded moments, will ask DH if we should inquire at our next appt or if he really wanted me to… “I could call in the morning to find out.”

He doesn’t even hesitate when he answers, “No.”

Sooooo…. I really do agree with him and think it’s going to be exciting to learn the surprise at the birth….. and hear the glorious announcement of…  “It’s a BOY!”   or…. “It’s a GIRL!”   BTW… We’re counting on those being the only options and/or surprising announcements.

*

Our little Firecracker keeps us entertained and is so very active… moving around, swimming laps… truly a little acrobat!   It floors me how awesome it is.

Baby’s happily using my bladder as a little trampoline.    More on that later.

At times, Baby takes me by such a surprise, I can’t help but let out a little gasp.

It doesn’t hurt, just sort of takes my breath away.   A few times, I’ve had to shift how I was sitting or laying just to knock the little linebacker/cheerleader into a different position.

It’s all soooo cool!

The other morning, while laying on the couch…  Josie (one of our 22lb French Bulldogs) was laying and snoring at the bottom of my belly, while Harper (our other 22lb Frenchie) was laying at the top of my belly snoring and using my belly as a chin rest.

Baby started to beating and pounding like there was a full drum set in there.   Obviously, letting me know this wasn’t to be tolerated.

When I told DH about it… he figured Baby didn’t like all the noise from their not so soft snoring and snorting… and compared the whole scenario to a downstairs tennant knocking on the ceiling complaining to the upstairs neighbors.   Too funny.

Oh… and DH even SAW  Baby move the last few days while I was laying down.   He said it was freaky the first time seeing my tummy move like that.

I love it.

*

I ask DH what Baby’s name is every day.   This too, if we actually decide on a final boy and girl name, will be a surprise for the masses.   I’m guessing any possible decision won’t be written in stone until it’s entered on the birth certificate.

We do have a handful of names which are faves, which he plays around with.. but every once in a while, he changes it up and throws me for a loop.

*

As for preparing for Baby, Baby’s Room, all that Baby Equipment andEE-EEK… the delivery… it’s coming along.

Kinda.

I’m still trying to find someone to give birth for me but so far… no takers.   ;)  I have a few more months to figure that little deal out.

*

The Baby/Birthing Prep classes start in May?

They don’t want you to take the class too early… thinking… by some chance in HELL one might actually forget what to do.

It’s not something I’ll be forgetting.. considering IT’S  been on my mind for the duration of this pregnancy so far.

I am taking each and every class offered out there… considering doubling up if necessary.   I say the more information the better.

Women have been doing this for a LONG time… and even go in for seconds.   And thirds, etc…

I suppose I could forget all that’s to be learned at class… but I have to be honest…  all those times seeing the live birth video in “health class” starting in middle school and again EVERY year till graduating high school is something I haven’t been able to shake.

They start the scare tactics young in parochial schools.   I guess you could say it worked, we only had one of our classmates get pregnant and this was in our Senior year.   She had twins.   I remember babies crying at graduation and she motioned to me they were her kids crying.

****

As For Things Crafty…. I’ve been sewing.

Finished MIL bag, made pillow cases for the nieces and nephews… and currently working on Baby stuff.     You know… hopefully they’ll all be finished before Baby turns twelve?

Have pictures and stuff.   Yeah… they’re on the laptop.

Hmmmph.

*

I’ve also been knitting!   Yayyyy!   At least a little bit.

Working on three… yes THREE little baby sweaters.   One was started in January… it’s just needing sleeves.    Yeah, it’s goin’ slowwwwwww.   It’s around here somewhere.   Sadly, I hadn’t really been in the knitting mood for a while into the New Year.

Then a few weeks back I got the urge to knit again and am almost finished with the Rocketry? baby sweater out of the uber colorful Dream In Color heaven (bought last Summer at Stitches Midwest) and am beginning another ‘Sweet Child Of Mine’ baby set in a cream Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino.   The first one which I knit two years ago ended up going to a friend for her new grandson (never got pics, still waiting for them from friend) so I need to get knitting and make one for our little family again!   It’s a fabulous Black Purl Design… will take pics when I’m further along and post about it and the other stuff.

****

So there’s a few things to let you know what’s going on in our little corner of the world.

I’ll be back!

Eventually…

Sooner than later…

I hope.

Wish me luck that I’ll actually get the laptop/router/network thingy up and running again.

In the meantime, feel free to email me your phone number and I’ll try and drop you a line.

The Best Team Won… Again!

Sunday, February 3, 2008

Super Bowl XLII – New York Giants 17   New England Patriots 14

 Giants at Super Bowl XLII

Can I just say…. AWESOME!

The Giants were completely underestimated throughout their 2007 season and absolutely throughout the playoffs.    There’s something satisfying about this win.

It’s not that I would’ve been upset if the Patriots won… as I would agree their 2007 team was something to reckon with.

The problem was that the Patriot’s victory stories were already written two weeks ago about their impending win of Super Bowl XLII and the perfect season.

And… throughout tonight’s broadcast, the severely annoying Joe Buck couldn’t stop about the ‘unbeatable’ Patriots and Brady and Moss and the fact they’re unbeatable… and blah blah.   The man couldn’t say anything good about the Giants… as far as he was concerned, they were just there.   LOL!   He was unusually silent in the last moments of the game after the Giants scored.   Funny… only when the game was officially over did Buck give the Giants some sort of kudos.   It almost seemed painful for him.

Let’s start giving Eli Manning and the rest of the well deserved NY Giants 2007 Team and season credit where credit is due!

WTG!

They prevailed when most never thought they would or could. Nobody was paying attention to anyone but the Patriots.

Was it just me or were the Giants considered virtually nameless (aside from Eli being Peyton’s little bro…. who btw looked like he didn’t even believe his brother and team could win) and practically placed on the same level as the Washington Generals to the Harlem Globetrotters

The Giants didn’t sneak up from behind, they weren’t even considered a possibilty.

Bite Your Tongue!

Friday, February 1, 2008

I believe in Karma or “…you get what you deserve”… er.. or whatever this was… in some shape or form.

Huh?

Yeah.. well.. what I mean is…

This afternoon, I was eating something I shouldn’t have been.

There’s nothing like a cold that takes your taste buds away AND to blaringly say in this situation…

YOU ARE EATING THIS ONLY BECAUSE IT’S THERE.

It was useless to do so.    There was absolutely no freakin’ nutritional value involved whatsoever.

Bleh.

I knew what I was doing.    But did I stop?   Nope.

I have this humungous container of Laffy Taffy which I received from my amazing Super Secret Pal this past Fall.    It is seriously one of my favorites and my pal aimed and succeeded to please.

Laffy Taffy is just that.    Taffy.    Damn good taffy in Cherry, Strawberry, Sour Apple and Banana flavors.

On top of all the taffy goodness?   Two jokes on every single wrapper!

Candy with comedy!

You would think the main reason I’d eat the stuff would be due to the enjoyable flavor, right?

Uh huh.

Soooo…. I’ve been “hittin’ the Taffy” on and off since it arrived in the mail.   I go in and grab a handful and toss them in my purse, knitting bag or… next to the computer.

While checking my email, I noticed those pieces of comical confection still sitting there.

They were lookin’ at me.

Inviting me to read their funny little jokes.

I knew full well, once they were in my hands.. I would open the wrapper and start gnawing on it.

The first was strawberry.

Q.  What happened to the wind?

A.  It blew away.

Bwahahahahaa…. how cute!

People, I’m guessing kids and families, from all over send these little laughs in.   This one was provided by Nicole P. in Kingman, AZ.

I even remember telling myself.. “Why even consider it? You’re not gonna taste a thing.”

*

Next… Sour Apple.    Two funnies worth this time.

Q.   How Do Small Children Travel?

A.   In Mini Vans.

Muwhahahahaaa!   Anna G. from New Smyrna, FL.

Q.   What Runs Faster?  Hot Or Cold?

A.   Hot.  Everyone Can Catch A Cold.

I was dying here.. how appropriate!   Good one Rebekah P. from Desoto, MO.!   Blaahhhahaaaaa!

No hesitation… GONE.

*

Then came… Banana.

Q.  What Kind Of Candy Gets The Giggles?

A.   Laffy Taffy!

Are you serious?  Fwahahahaaaa… Way too funn……………………………………

The pause came first.   A serious and lengthy pause where my mouth is hanging open…  banana flavored drool starting to pool over the injury.

It couldn’t be as bad as it felt.   Very odd… I didn’t taste any of the blood….?    Oh yeah… right.

It took about 3-5 seconds to confirm that I did indeed cause significant injury.    And…  sure enough… it hurt just as much as I expected it would.

My not so silent scream eventually turned into…  Bleep Bleep Bleeeeeeep Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!!!!!!!!!

In all reality, this IS one of the known drawbacks of eating Laffy Taffy while laughing at one of their “noth az fahnny az I thaawt” jokes.

It should’ve said, “What Candy Gets The Last Laugh?”   Oh yeah.. Hey!   Thanks Tim E.  from Lawrence, KS.

Didn’t the previous joke try telling me something?

Bleep.

Bleep.  Bleep.

The lack of any flavor from those 2 1/4 pieces made the pain of the situation all the worse.

Bleep.

As soon as I finished the remaining 3/4 of that stinkin’ yellow and red blob… I SWORE I wouldn’t touch any more until I got my taste buds back.

;)

Mostly Fabric and Thread

Thursday, January 31, 2008

There hasn’t been too much knitting going on at the Yellow House during the New Year thus far.

Knitting projects certainly exist, though ACTUAL knitting isn’t really happening unless I’m at Knit Night.

Yee gads… I know!

*

It’s nice not to have a specific deadline for something crafty at the moment.   I’m pleased to knit when I want to and not because I need to.

Other than a project for my LYS which is still being whittled away on…. There are plenty of knitting WIPs and UFOs waiting desperately for me to finish them.

Currently, the only thing I’ve wanted to knit is a cute little baby sweater.   More about the sweater in a future post.

At the moment I’ve been concentrating on other things…  And you’ll be pleased to know there HAS been other Crafty Action goin’ on.

****

Aaaahhh… Sewing.

I’ve Been Happily Using My Sewing Machine Again.    It’s been a nice change of pace for me.

I really hadn’t sewn much since late Spring 2007 where I had left off a few projects and lots and lots of fabric.

Pins011808

To get myself started again, I decided to enroll in the same ‘open lab’ type sewing class I had taken early last year.

The class is for people of all skill levels to bring in different projects and get the help they need as they need it.

****

Have I introduced you to our niece Kylie?

Kylie122407
Kylie - Christmas Eve 2007

Well…. the following FO is for sweet and talented dancing Kylie……  she’s a girly girl.

*

FO - Kylie’s Bright Kitty Backpack

WIPKittyBackPack011108e

This bright and fun backpack was recently finished for our niece, Kylie.

I’m hoping we will give it to her for her fifth birthday which is at the end of February.

FOKittyBPLining011708

FOKittyBPLiningTag011708

I love the different colors and types of fabrics used.

They were fun to put together and once I found the main fabric, the rest seemed easy to locate.   I only wish the contrast for the lining could be seen on the outside when the bag is closed.

WIPKittyBackPack011108d

It took me a while to find the right green fabric for the body of the bag.   I wanted to go with a corduroy similar to the example on the pattern but it wasn’t easy to find.

Then one day, in a craft store I had already searched in often.. I saw IT.

It was near the front of the shop and I was stuck in the back.

A light was shining down on the most perfect bolt of leaf green baby corduroy fabric I had ever seen.

How did I miss it before?!

I’m sure I managed to snatch up my prize up in a matter of seconds, but it felt like I was stuck in slow motion.

It seemed like infinity trying to make my way through the winding maze of fleece, cotton, lame and spandex.

AND… there was a feisty woman reaching for the same prize I was after!   OK… she was likely a harmless little old lady reaching for some dainty flowered flannel….but I swear she looked vicious at the time.

WIPKittyBackPack011108

The kitty is made out of a bright pink suede and I used simple felt for the accents and features of the feline.

FOKittyBPZipPull011708

My intention was to find a few beads to string onto the metallic cord/ribbon. Without looking in too many places, I couldn’t find anything that would allow the bulky and stiff material to slide through it.

With the assistance of a local Bead Expert,  I made this zipper pull which strung over the ribbon and then simply hangs next to it.

WIPKittyBackPack011108c

I pretended I wasn’t intimidated (much) with the thought of applique.

This is the first time I did any type of the technique and while I can see the many areas needing improvement,  I’m goin’ with the motto of one of my instructors…. “Can you see the mistakes from five feet away? If not, then don’t worry about it.”

*

I hope to make another bag from the same pattern with a monkey on the front for our nephew Tyler…

Tyler101606
Tyler grinning for the camera.

Our nephew will have his fourth birthday in March.   He just may get it for his fifth birthday…. or tenth?

FO - Garden Tote

FOGardenToteLining011708a

Paisley and Striped Canvas Twill in a variety of greens, browns and kahki make up the roomy Garden Tote.

FOGardenTotePockets011708b

The bag has already been in use for this past week’s Knit Night and then my sewing class.

There isn’t a lot of gardening needing to be done at this time of year.

FOGardenTote011708a

I haven’t taken advantage of the many outside pockets yet.

There are so many (eight) and they’re all on the larger side.  I think some of my items would get lost if I continue to use this tote for my crafts.

FOGardenTotePockets011708

The pleated pockets are so nice though.   I’ve done this before and I believe I’ll try to incorporate more pleats into some of my other projects with pockets.

There is also a removable pocket which needs a few more stitches….. and will strap onto one handle and hang inside the tote.

****

WIP - Bunny’s Everyday Tote

WIPBunnysTote012408b

This isn’t quite finished yet.

It’s a gift for my MIL, who I invited to help pick out and make her own fabric choices…. and then she insisted on paying for it all.    She does this.

It’s not exactly a gift any more but I’m still happy to make it for her.

WIPBunnysTote012408d

I made a mistake sewing on the lower suede accents.  Of course I didn’t notice the problem until I had the two sides of the bag sewn together.

Aack!

It’s in the process of being corrected and will soon be on it’s way to becoming an FO.

****

WIP - Bunny’s Five Gallon Garden Tote

WIP5GalGardenTote011808a

Another garden tote project with my MIL in mind.

This one she isn’t aware of.

WIP5GalGardenTote011808d

My in-laws really enjoy spending time in their spacious yard.

I’m hoping this tote, which fits over a five gallon pail, will come in handy for my MIL.    She plants wonderful perrenials and annuals each season in endless beds and containers throughout her yard.

****

Mind you.. most of these projects were started and abandoned last Spring when the final class ended.    Essentially these are the leftovers from my Monster Sewing Binge of early 2007.   I didn’t partake in the Fall sessions.

So, all of the above were dug from the depths and brought back to life again during the past few weeks.   And much of this time was spent figuring out where in the pattern I left off.

I haven’t shown all of my Sewing Extravaganza intended for 2008… yet.

What’s New With You?

The Weather Outside Has Been Frightful.

Brrrr013008a

It may look like a harmless sunny day.. but the temperature at the time this picture was taken was below zero.   Once they say, negative whatever.. I tend to block it out actuals.

BrrrrBirdFeeder013008a

It’s been so frigid and blistery cold… even the birds haven’t been around for a visit lately.

Note: Both of the pictures above were taken through the window and in the warmth of our little yellow house.

****

For the most part it’s been quiet in our little world.

Certainly busy… but relatively quiet.

Basically, goin’ through the motions of life I suppose.

*

This is where I’ve tried to be most often over the last few months…

FrenchieHotWaterBottle011708b

The couch, my blanket, a frenchie and sleep.

Yawn.

Seriously, how can you resist a Frenchie Hot Water Bottle like this?

Josie “Pot Roast”, our brindle French Bulldog, is such a cuddler.   How have I ever lived without her?    Gah!    She turned four this past December 5th.    Little girl is getting some serious gray over her muzzle and chest.    She seems to be cool with it though and is taking it in stride.

Not only that, I have my “blankie” over me.   LOL!    I love that blanket.

Mom bought it before I was born.. I took it over early on and haven’t let it out of my sight since.   It’s certainly had it’s share of use over the years.   The color is FUN… green, pink and orange.   I’ll have to take share a pic in the future of it’s juicy (now faded) colors.

Harper, our brindle pied Frenchie was likely cuddling with DH… he’s such a daddy’s boy.   Or maybe snapping the picture?

****

The Cravings… of the moment.

It’s interesting… I don’t need to be pregnant to crave some foods.

The INTENSE NEED for some foods is what’s been a little crazy.

Peaches013008aa

Peaches.

Yes!    Thank GOD this glorious fruit finally arrived at our local markets shortly after Christmas.

*

ApplesPinkLady013008a

Apples.

I normally enjoy Granny Smith most often, but the apple variety of the moment seems to be the Pink Lady.

*

Grapes013008a

Grapes.

As long as they’re seedless, I’m good.

*

DillPickles013008b

Pickles.

Wonderful.   We’ve always got a jar of Milwaukee Midget Dill Pickles in the fridge.   They look better in person, promise.   It’s the flash.

*

Popcorn013008a5

Popcorn.

Black popcorn…. popped fresh in my Stir Crazy Popcorn Popper, lightly salted, never buttered.

*

The weird things.

I seem to crave foods that I’ve had or enjoyed at some point in my distant past.   Mostly, things I haven’t thought of for years or even wanted.

RRPizzaLunch011108

Pizza.

In particular, Rocky Rococo Pizza.    Sure, I’ve enjoyed Pizza over the years… but this is a pizza we sometimes pursued in high school after a game, the plays or whatever.

Since I’ve been at the Mall Job, I have smelled this specific pizza as I’ve left the mall each time.    Before and early in the pregnancy, it basically made me feel like gagging.

Then suddenly, a few weeks ago… I asked DH if he wanted to head to the new Rocky’s that opened on the East side of town.   (I try to stay away from the mall at all costs.)

*

CinnRolls012208aa

Cinnamon Rolls

The only thing I can think of when I saw the container of Grands Cinnamon Rolls by Pillsbury it reminded me of the rolls I used to make at home while in high school.

I often made homemade baking powder biscuits and used the dough for fresh cinnamon rolls.   The filling was likely typical (I may have spiced it up a bit) but the biscuit dough offset the sweet filling nicely.

OMG.. now I’m gonna have to really make these again soon.   The thought of Pillsbury isn’t cutting it anymore.

*

Oh There’s More.

Hummus with toasted pita and fresh cucumbers. Goldfish crackers. Orange Juice. Most fruit juices. Whopper Junior, no tomato, very light mayo.  My Grandma’s Recipe For Roasted Chicken.  Homemade Mac N Cheese.   Kraft Mac N Cheese (doctored up with tuna, cream of mushroom soup and peas).  Taffy. Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls and/or Nutty Bars.  Double Stuff Oreos.  Baby Ruth Candy Bars.  Taffy. Dark Chocolate Moose Crunch Bars.  Toblerone. Taffy.  Old Fashion Red Licorice.   Taffy.    And etc….

There seems to be no end.

*

Most of the time, a single taste will do the trick and then it’s over.

We’ll see what talking about everything does.

****

Pregnancy is Amazing but Equally as Odd.

I‘ll spare most of the oddities… for now.

*

We had another ultrasound!!

Oh goodness… I’m in love.

The baby looks like an actual baby now!     Moving, turning, tossing, turning some more.    Moving hand to mouth… tucking hand under leg.

The pictures…. Wow.

The additional moment I hope never to forget?

Seeing baby stretch and arch their back like what a newborn would do.

Sigh.

Feeling sick from the pregnancy is still lingering, but for the most part has been less.    It still affects me on a regular basis, but no longer all day long.

Yayyyyyy!

*

My immune system has taken a vacation.

Bleh.

What started as an annoying catch in my throat causing an intermittent cough… has now turned into another dang cold.

This new cold took me by surprise.    Considering it’s my third or fourth bout with some type of crap since my pregnancy began?

It would be nice if I could actually take something that would make the symptoms better. But alas, I am stuck with the stuff nobody should waste their money on… except for my old friend, Extra Strength Tylenol.

Like clockwork, I’ve taken my over the counter candy…. er medicine and I’d like to say it’s working some.

Ask me again in a few days.

*

Metal mouth?

I’ve had this sour or metallic taste in my mouth for the last month.   At first I thought it was just me and well.. you know, the foods I’ve been eating.

Come to find out, this is typical in this stage of pregnancy.

What the…?

I’ve read, one way to curb this taste would be eating or drinking something similar to offset it?

The deal is… when I feel like I’ve just gargled aluminum foil… I don’t necessarily feel like drinking or eating something sour, tangy or the like.

It’s even been a week or more since I’ve enjoyed orange juice or my beloved dill pickles.

Gasp!

****

What sparked this new post talking food and cravings?

Maybe the fact I can’t taste a thing at the moment with this crappy cold.    Nothing.  Nada.   Nill.   Zilch.  Zip.

Oh, except… of course… that metallic taste which never plans to go away.

LOL!

Have You Seen The Movie Juno!?

Juno

It’s about a teenage pregnancy, a dysfunctional family and a crumbling marriage…

and well… it’s great.

Really.

When and if you see the movie Juno, you’ll have to let me know what you thought.

****

When there’s a movie I really wanna see… my motto HAS to be…

“Don’t read about it, don’t read reviews of who said whatever, just go see it.”

I don’t always remember when my interest is peaked by a new story.   And there’s been plenty of shows/books/movies that have been disappointing for me because I didnt’ follow my Movie Motto or had gotten into a position where I’ve overheard something.

For instance, I watched part of a few documentries or something on a few recent movies because they intrigued me.  I had no sense to not hear/watch/read these outlines of the stories and even though I didn’t finish either.. but dang it… I hate the idea going to a movie and analyzing and comparing what I heard/watched/read.

Hmmmph.

Sometimes you can’t control what others say.   Even when you tell them seconds before… “I didn’t didn’t finish the story yet”.

*** BEWARE — SERIOUS JUNO SPOILERS AHEAD ***

***

Here’s what I thought of Juno.

Photo images/photos/gallery/mt058453H3.jpg

If you like quirky, clever, original… you likely enjoy it as much as I did.

There was a point early in the movie where I thought some of the dialogue was getting a bit TOO clever but this feeling drifted away shortly thereafter when the story ensued.

Dang… the writing was fabulous and fun… and the director certainly made me feel like it was.  I guess the young director acquired a little talent, aside from his own natural creativity, from that of his Dad.

*

Ellen Page did so well with this character, Juno.   And yes, I’m pleased she received an Oscar nomination for the role.  She really made it her own.  There isn’t any other actress I could see as this character.

She deserves any kudos she gets for the movie, as does the writer and director.

Vanessa Loring: Your parents are probably wondering where you are.
Juno MacGuff: Nah… I mean, I’m already pregnant, so what other kind of shenanigans could I get into?

Leah: Dude, I think it’s best to just tell ‘em.
Juno MacGuff: I’m Pregnant.
Bren: Oh, God.
Juno MacGuff: But, uh ah, I’m going to give it up for adoption and I already found the perfect couple, they’re going to pay for the medical expenses and everything. And and what ah 30 or odd weeks we can just pretend that this never happened.
Mac MacGuff: You’re pregnant?
Juno MacGuff: I’m sorry. I’m sorry… And if it is any consolation I have heartburn that is radiating in my knee caps and I haven’t taken a dump since like Wednesday… morning.

Juno MacGuff: You should’ve gone to China, you know, ’cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events.

I loved the interaction between Juno and her parents.   Especially when she told her Dad and Stepmom the news of her pregnancy….

Mac MacGuff: No, I know I mean who’s the father, Juno?
Juno MacGuff: Umm… It’s Paulie Bleeker.
Mac MacGuff: Paulie Bleeker?  Really?
Juno MacGuff: What?
Mac MacGuff: I didn’t think he had it in him.
Leah: I know, right?

Bwahahahahahaaaaaa….. I LOVE Juno’s Dad.

Mac MacGuff: Did you see that coming?
Bren: Yeah… but I was hoping she was expelled, or into hard drugs.
Mac MacGuff: Or DWI… anything but this.

Mac MacGuff: Next time I see that Bleeker kid I’m going to punch him in the wiener.

**

OK… Brief off topic moment…

I hate that word…. weiner.

Always have.

I like the idea of someone wanting to punch it.   The actual word… NOT the body part he was referring to.

**

The actor, J.K. Simmons who plays Mac MacGuff has such a great resume.   I love him in most everything I’ve seen him work in.

I love that Juno’s parents didn’t do the typical freak out of the news.

I love that the Stepmom started making that list right away (after the initial shock) to help take care of Juno.

I love that they supported her in her decision… didn’t demand, direct.. just listened and made the attempt to help her in what she chose to do.

*

The movie wasn’t only quirky… it was also tender and sweet.

Photo images/photos/gallery/mt058453H5.jpg

The touching relationship between Juno and Paulie Bleeker, played by Michael Cera, was memorable.

Juno MacGuff: I think I’m, like, in love with you.
Paulie Bleeker: You mean as friends?
Juno MacGuff: No, I mean, like, for real. ‘Cause you’re, like, the coolest person I’ve ever met, and you don’t even have to try, you know…
Paulie Bleeker: I try really hard, actually.

Michael Cera was awesome in Arrested Development.   I miss that show.

*

I could relate…

 Photo images/photos/gallery/mt058453H2.jpg

… to both the Juno character (for a few obvious reasons) and Vanessa, the adoptive mother… played by Jennifer Garner.

Mostly, I felt for Vanessa in her desire for a child… a family…   She was mostly hesitant and strained.  You were really hoping she would just relax.   You wanted her to believe even when you know she couldn’t.   I could understand her actions, personality, and even more in the end when her marriage crumbled.   She knew.   There was an unknown reason (to us) for her to be hesitant (aside from the chaotic feelings of wanting a child).. not necessarily because of Juno and the baby… but because she knew.

Mark Loring: [after Vanessa's asks him if he found an apartment] It’s not an apartment, it’s a loft.
Vanessa Loring: Well, aren’t you the cool one?

Vanessa Loring: How do I look?
Bren: Like a new mom. Scared shitless.

*

Huh?

I didn’t care for the uncomfortable interaction later in the movie between Juno and the adoptive father, Mark Loring, played by Jason Bateman. It was sooo very creepy and I’m pleased in the end he didn’t have anything to do with the baby.

*

I’m looking forward to another movie from the people behind Juno.

It was really good.

I recommend.

Thumbs up.

Three and a half stars.

Will likely buy the DVD.

Over a week ago.. on the same afternoon, DH and I had a mini matinee movie marathon.

We also saw 27 Dresses with Katherine Heigl.

Photo images/photos/gallery/mt059035H5.jpg

It was a good entertaining movie.

Nothing which will win grand awards but it was a fun movie to enjoy during an afternoon matinee.

There is something refreshing about Katherine Heigl.    She seems to exude positive energy and personality… someone you would want in your life… a fun friend to share some laughs with.

I imagine some people… men for example… would like her in their lives for very different reasons.    I can see this.   She is stunning.   Though, sometimes her beauty takes me by surprise.   I guess I forget, as I get wrapped up with enjoying her character(s).

No Country for Old Men

No Country For Old Men is still on my list.   I happily noticed it arrived back to the theatre last week.

We were thinking of adding it to our matinee marathon, but sleepiness and a headache were brewing after the second movie so we headed home.

DH and I are thinking of heading to that one soon… as in this weekend…. before it disappears again.

****

We LOVE the movies.

Before last week, it had been a while since we headed to the movie theatre… I guess we go in streaks.   We used to go more often.  Especially at certain holidays.

Yes, it can be expensive seeing a movie in the theatre but some movies were MEANT to be seen on the big screen.   There’s something special about enjoying time at the theatre.

We saw the latest Harry Potter movie in the theatres and DH did take me to see 3:10 To Yuma this past year… but that was pretty much it.   Prior to that?   No clue when we saw a movie in the theatre.

Often, our intention is to head to the theatre for a particular movie but it doesn’t always happen.   Time gets away from us… But, many of them aren’t in the theatres long enough to allow us to do this.   You really have to be quick nowadays.

It seems like movies are burned into DVDs at the same time as or earlier than they are made to be distributed out to the theatres.

I don’t think we actually rented any movies last year at all.    Many times we just buy a DVD if we catch it on sale when it hits the shelves.   Then our issue becomes when to sit down and watch it together.

We are spoiled by our DVR system.   There are many shows we record and it’s often nice to sit back and have a little marathon at home of the different recordings we’ve accumulated.

The Commons

Friday, January 25, 2008

Found THIS in Newsweek….  Thought I’d share.

If you like photograghy, in particular that of everyday life, people, history and plain old coolness…. you’ll enjoy this project between the Library Of Congress and Flickr.

One of the things I love the most, aside from taking pictures of most everything, is looking at pictures others have taken.   From the earliest times in photography, to the most current moment in our lives… it’s an amazing peek into the world.

THE COMMONS:  Your Opportunity To Contribute To Describing The World’s Public Photo Collections

The Library Of Congress Pilot Project

Back in June of 2007, we began our first collaboration with a civic institution to facilitate giving people a voice in describing the content of a publicly-held photography collection.

The key goals of this pilot project are to firstly give you a taste of the hidden treasures in the huge Library of Congress collection, and secondly to show how your input of a tag or two can make the collection even richer.

You’re invited to help describe photographs in the Library of Congress’ collection on Flickr, by adding tags or leaving comments.*

This MSNBC article was cool too…

Can Photo Clues Lead To Camera’s Owner?

I hope the link continues to work… you never know with MSNBC online.

The article is a WONDERFUL story about a couple who found a camera in a taxi in the heart of bustling NYC.   Rather than keeping it for themselves, they make a generous attempt of finding the owners.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all people were as kind and courteous?

RIP x2

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

The other day the world learned actor Brad Renfro died and now… just seconds ago… I read on the news the Oscar nominated actor Heath Ledger died of an apparent drug overdose in Manhattan.

WTF!

If these two recent high profile deaths, along with the many many MANY drug overdoses don’t shake SOME sort of sense into those who need help… I don’t know WHAT will.

Please please PLEASE allow at least a few to learn from this or be shook into reality.

Wow.

Like my brother.. so young, such promise, such a waste, so very very VERY SAD.

Holiday Dinner Party 2007

Monday, January 21, 2008

One evening in December, in lieu of a regular Knit Night… some members of our Knitting Circle gathered together to enjoy a festive Holiday Dinner Party at a wonderful local restaurant.

Yep… still playing catch up.

NEWIKnittingCircleHolidayParty121807b

Mark’s East Side is an amazing Supper Club which also specializes in German food.   It was a nice time and a wonderful way to celebrate the Season with new friends.

Not everyone could stay for dinner so we started our evening sipping and socializing in the pub area of the restaurant for about an hour.

Eventually, we made our way to a semi-private dining room where a cozy table was set for us.

HolidayDinnerPartyTable121807ee

I made up some simple gift bags for everyone to enjoy as party favors and a few small door prizes.   Seriously… You can’t have a party without treats and surprises!

HolidayDinnerPartyTable121807b

Each bag was filled with homemade holiday treats and some candies.  I love parties… love planning parties and events.   It’s amazing to see the smiles and happiness on the faces of guests.  Especially when they aren’t expecting anything.

I called it the Tower of Cookies.   I made a tower with six varieties of cookies, wrapped them in a clear bag… added a candy cane and some other goodies and closed them with a festive colored ribbon.

Tower Of Cookies
From the top… Cherry Almond Cups, Almond Raspberry Sandwich, Molasses, Amish Sugar, Chewy Coconut and a Snicker-doodle.

Confession: Tower of Cookie Pictures taken by Vicki Knitorious and blatantly stolen by me since I failed to take personal pics of the specific cookies in the tower, much less the individual cookies.  Baaaaad blogging baker…..

Tower Of Cookies II

Thank you again to the lovely Vicki, who kindly blogged (with more details) about the event here and here.

We had an Ornament Exchange during the party.

Those who were interested brought a wrapped Christmas ornament to swap with another in a blind exchange.

It was fun!

Throughout the dinner, we would randomly swap our wrapped ornaments with someone until finally we were left with the one we opened for ourselves.

Operation Holiday Cookie 2007

Cherry Almond Cup Molasses CookieSnickerdoodle Cookie

Each year, I usually make the Cherry Almond Cups, Molasses (Ginger), Snicker-doodles and a few other varieties, including candies, fudge and snack mixes.

Raspberry Almond SandwichAmish Sugar Cookie

The Almond Raspberry Sandwich (there’s a story on this addictive little gem!) and Amish Sugar cookies are recipes from my husband’s family and my MIL make them throughout the year and this is the first time I made them.

Chewy Coconut Cookie

The Coconut cookie is a fabulous new recipe I thought I’d try this year.   Very tasty.

*

A Quick Family Cookie Back-story:

The Almond Raspberry Sandwich cookie was the infamous cookie my husband, his brothers and cousins raced to the cookie jar for at their dear Grandmother’s house.   They had to dig to the bottom of the jar to be sure they didn’t miss any.

The cookie is small.  They are best when they can be eaten in just one or two bites.  The burst of Almond flavor with the Raspberry preserves is AMAZING!

Soooo… of course then, the best cutter to use is something smaller in diameter than an inch and a half but even better smaller yet.   I guess DHs beloved Grandma used the cap of a vinegar jar!

Seriously, these are one of the BEST cookies I’ve ever had.   I hoard them.

Eventually, the family recipe was lost after my husband’s Grandmother passed away.   It was gone.   NOBODY knew how to make them.  They were a memory for a long time.

This recipe was meant to be found again.

Years later, when DHs Grandpa then passed and the family was cleaning out the house…. surprisingly… someone found THE recipe!

Yayyyyyy!!

BTW… the ONLY way you’ll get the family secret recipe?    You must work for it by helping me roll them out, bake, fill with preserves, sandwich and sugar… and even then, you’ll have to sign away your soul.

*

We also made some wonderful Almond Sugar Cut-Out Cookies… which is also a recipe from my MIL.

HolidayCookieCentral121207a
Thank goodness for the apron I wore.   I was covered in flour from head to toe!   LOL!

BTW—- I love love LOVE myRoul’Pat. The marble rolling pin is Maria’s… but I received one for Christmas a few weeks later!   Yayyyy!   I also love love LOVE my half sheet baking pan Silpats.

Sadly, I didn’t get to frost the cut outs before the event so they weren’t included in the favor bags for the party.

BakedAlmondCutOuts121207e

Cooling and waiting for a scrumptious Almond icing…. Mmmm!

My MIL used lemon one year for quite a few batches and well.. they just weren’t the same.  For me anyhow.   I bought her more Almond Extract… Hehehehehhheeeee……

As you can see from the flavors of three of the cookies…. I ADORE Almond at the Holidays.   Sooo good!

BakedAlmondCutOuts121207f

Actually, these poor cookies STILL haven’t been frosted… but they were so tasty.

*

This year, I had to limit it to only baking cookies.   I never had a chance to make the candies.

And believe me…. the ONLY reason I was able to make the amount of cookies I needed for the party and other holiday events was with the help of Maria (shown above in the dinner party pics), my Mom and sweet DH.   I usually bring platters, tins and bags full of these treats to neighbors, friends and family members throughout the season.

Thank you again Maria (official roller outer of all those little almond discs for the Raspberry Almond Sandwiches), Mom (official cookie sugar-er) and dear hubby (official oven dude) !

RaspCremeTorte121607
I’d LOVE to say I made this Raspberry Creme Torte(with a plate of fresh Snicker-doodles in the background)… but alas, DH and I picked it up at Manderfields…. a fabulous yummy local bakery and my scale’s worst nightmare.

We surprised Maria with it for her birthday on the last day of Operation Holiday Cookie 2007.

NY Giants 23   GB Packers 20   Final/Overtime

The Giants eventually pulled past the Pack in the end during overtime.   I was PRAYING Lawrence Tynes would make a hat trick out of missing his field goals for the game….

Sigh.

I don’t believe either team looked like they had it in them… though the Giants seemed to always be one step ahead.   Didn’t the game feel like it slowly stumbled along?   It came down to who could overcome their mistakes better than the other and simply put… the Giants prevailed.

Eli Manning and his team deserve their victory…  tonight’s game gave them their 10th game in a row.   Remember they were a wildcard team and stunned everyone throughout the playoffs.   Here’s hoping they can do the same in a few weeks.

It WAS as harsh out there as the tempertature indicated.  How can anyone play your best in weather as frigid as today was here in NE Wisconsin?   I simply went outside a few times during the day just to let our dogs out and… it was miserable!

Would it have been different playing in a balmy 32 degree weather?

Can we have a do over?

*

The Packers had an awesome season… they made it this far for a reason.  Favre and the Packers are amazing.   They’re a great team.. and will do as well and better next season.   In the 1995 season we lost the NFC Championship game to Dallas.. the following year, we went on to win the SuperBowl.   Hmmm… gotta love that possibility!

Tomorrow will be a day of mourning here in Wisconsin.

And then on Tuesday… we’ll move on.

*

Good luck to the NY Giants in SuperBowl XLII on Feb 3, 2008!

Life As A Packer Fan

Saturday, January 19, 2008

Sooooo…. In honor of the Green Bay Packers hosting the New York Giants tomorrow evening for the NFC Championship game at Lambeau field

I thought I’d share a little Packer love, including the last few pictures of Gnorm during his visit with us.

Feel free to skip this post if you’re not into the NFL or the Packers… or just scroll down through all the pictures.

****

Life As A Packer Fan

It shouldn’t really be a surprise.. but I’m indeed in LOVE with the NFLAnd yes… my fave team is and always has been the Green Bay Packers.

I wasn’t born a Packer fan nor a fan of football.   I didn’t really learn the ins and outs of Pro Football until 1989 when I moved from college in Madison to work in Milwaukee.  Sure, I was fully aware of the game prior (how could you not while living in WI) but I really didn’t fall in love with Football until then.

Here’s the thing…..  When you live in WI it’s difficult not to know what’s going on with or hear about Football and the Packers… no matter what part of the state.

Of course when I lived in Madison it was mostly all and everything Badgers, the Big 10, etc…   Moving to Milwaukee.. it was mostly ethnic and music fests (Summerfest anyone?), Baseball and the Brewers.   There was more talk of the Pack in Milwaukee than the other areas I lived prior due to some of the games were played in Milwaukee at that time.    This is likely why my interest in the NFL sparked and I started to follow the games.

*

When I relocated to Green Bay… I learned EVERYTHING was about the Packers.    And it has been since the beginning and still is today.

I moved to the city in 1992.   This was the same year Holmgren started coaching the team and Brett Favre was traded to the Packers from Altanta.

Living in Green Bay during the 1990’s was fabulous, especially related to football.. and such great timing!   In 1993, Reggie White, the most sought after free agent, signed with the Packers and Leroy Butler invented the Lambeau Leap.   A few seasons and many fabulous games later…  we landed back at the Super Bowl two years in a row in 1997 and 1998.

I was living and breathing the Packer life and enjoying every minute of it.   It was a GREAT time.

All other sports and WI teams sort of go to the wayside in Green Bay… or maybe it just seemed like this to me since I was primarily interested in the NFL?   I heard about other sports more when it wasn’t the NFL season and when it was… all the other news arrived in small tidbits at the near end of the sportscast or in the sports section.   The Packers always have their own page or two or twelve in the Press Gazette

I imagine it would be a living hell for someone living in Green Bay who isn’t a Packer fan.

Most people living in the Green Bay area just have an air about them and essentially exude proud Packer Fan.   Even during seasons where we’re at the bottom of the standings in the NFL.   Sure, there are some fans who constantly complain about the Packers and doubt they’ll win when a mistake takes place at some point during the game…. but for the most part, most of us are optimistic the Packers will do well.

The majority of Packer fans welcome other team’s fans with open arms.   Sure we’ll try to put you into something Green and/or Gold, like a Cheesehead, with your own team colors, eat a Brat and drink a Wisconsin beer… but other than that, we seriously love talking football with others who love talking football.
Most NFL fans who visit Green Bay… Lambeau Field, the Packer Hall Of Fame and other football related places in the area have a great respect for the legacy, history and beginning to the game of football.

While seeing a Packer game at Lambeau field is like no other, one doesn’t need to be lucky enough to score Packer Game tickets to enjoy the atmosphere.   Though, if you really want to get tickets.. they’re always available.  Just do a little digging and don’t pay crazy prices, especially for the regular season games.

I cherish the years I spent living in Green Bay and miss it terribly during the NFL season… at least on game days.   And with the Packers entering into another NFC Championship game which could lead them to another Super Bowl… I’m missing living IN Green Bay even more.

I wasn’t reminded about how saturated my life was with the Green and Gold until I moved slightly out of the core community a few years ago.

There is something unmistakably different about living IN Green Bay vs living outside of the area during football season…. Even if it’s only 20-30 or so miles.  Sure the local TV channels are the same… As well I travel to Green Bay regularly but… it’s just different.   I can’t explain it.

****

A Peek Into Life In And Around Lambeau

Even with all the grand history and spectacular history… one can get used to being around the stadium, history, games, players, tailgating, fans, etc…  Sort of taking it for granted.   I guess since I’ve lived in WI my whole life and in Northeast WI for the last sixteen years… it comes with the territory.

Those of us in WI are used to our own excitement of the Packers… but all of the enthusiasm brimming from outside of the area brings me back to realizing how cool it is to live here.   Makes me stop and smell the bratwurst.

*If you’ve never been to Lambeau Field on Game Day the following should be a treat for you… along with all the other many links to the Green Bay Packers I’ve included throughout the post.

I present to you…

The Official Lambeau Field and Tailgate Web Cams can be seen HERE and HERE.

Be sure to visit these tomorrow all day.. especially in the afternoon and evening for an entertaining view of Game Day at Lambeau in Green Bay.   It’s going to be a frigid, blistery and blustery cold day so dress warm.

I’m sure there are other cams out there.. but I didn’t come across others with my limited search.

Enjoy!!

Two little Packer Fans say Woof.

JoHar Packer 5
This is their stare down to any Packer opponent… currently directing their “look” toward the NY Giants.

Aren’t they great?

Our silly little French Bulldogs are great sports.  Though, they are typical Frenchies and are easily swayed with a treat of any sort.   And yes, cheese is a favorite.

GnormGBTroopCap102907
The past few years the Packer organization has sold hats to benefit Breast Cancer and the Heart Association.. this year they are selling a hat which supports members of the military, veterans and their families.

I’m not sure any of these caps are available any longer… though it wouldn’t hurt to check in with the Pro Shop to be sure.    There likely are some floating around on eBay.

Of course you can buy mine for the low low LOW cost of fabulous 2008/2009 Packer Season tickets on or around the 50 yd line.    Of course any scrumptious yarn on top of this would be nice too?

Game Night

*

Sadly, since the Packer’s were out of town on business at Mile High Stadium… we ended up watching that week’s game from home.
